The complete story

Why this game?

Psy-O-Blade first appeared on Japanese computers in 1988. Its story was designed around two protagonists whose paths never directly cross, but whose discoveries are connected beneath the surface.

The MSX2 release preserves both halves of that design. Disk A follows Keith and the Cassowary crew as they investigate the silent interstellar ship Septemius 2. Disk B returns to events on Earth and reveals the parallel side of the mystery. Together, the two scenarios give the story its intended scale and context.

The 1990 Mega Drive adaptation is substantially reduced. It keeps the space investigation but removes the entire second episode, including the Earth-side events found on Disk B. The surviving game is consequently much shorter, and contemporary retrospective coverage notes that its ending feels rushed and leaves loose threads behind.

No published developer explanation for the cut has been found. The most careful conclusion is that the multi-disk computer adventure was deliberately condensed while being rebuilt as a cartridge-based console game. Whatever the production reason, the result is clear: the Mega Drive edition presents only one side of the original story.

Ironically, that shortened Mega Drive version is also the only edition currently available in English, through a complete fan-translation patch released in 2015. Translating the MSX2 version therefore matters for more than preservation: it brings the most complete—and most authentic—version of Psy-O-Blade to English-speaking players for the first time.

Inside the translation

A scene-by-scene look at Psy-O-Blade in English.

This living gallery documents the translation as it appears in the game. Each scene can hold the original Japanese capture beside the new English version, making wording, layout, and presentation easy to compare.
